Other Air Conditioning Factors to Consider

Multiple Thermostats

If your home has more than one story, you might want to consider installing two thermostats to evenly control its temperature. The higher the floor of your home, the warmer it will be than the floor below it. If you lower the overall temperature of your home to make the uppermost floor comfortable, the lower floors will invariably be too cold. Multiple thermostats allow you to regulate the temperature floor by floor.

Two-Speed Air Conditioners

To save on energy costs and noise levels, consider purchasing a two-speed Air Conditioner. These units switch to a lower speed 80% of the time, during which they use half the usual amount of energy. Not only will this save you money on your electricity bill, but on-off cycles will decrease and drafts and temperature swings will occur far less often.

High Velocity Heating and Cooling

If you do not already have ducts in your home and it is impractical for you to install them, an alternative you might be able to implement in your home is High Velocity Heating and Cooling. This type of setup involves threading 2-inch plastic tubes throughout your home, in attics, basements and inside walls. The air, cooled or heated from a furnace in your basement is blown at a higher velocity and from more registers, up to five per room, to account for the smaller size of the tubes. This system is relatively new and not common, so ask a contractor about its availability.
